The Doers: Expedition Outside

First Southwest Bank • August 1, 2019

First Southwest Bank is proud to support new and innovative ideas in our community and beyond. As a title sponsor for the Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs (SCAPE) we know the importance of helping small companies learn, grow, and reach new levels. These businesses are crucial to the success of our region.

Garnering more and more attention in rural Colorado, Expedition Outside is a technology platform providing private water access to fishermen in the Southwest region, and is one of SCAPE’s six student picks this year.

The conflict between private and public lands has long been an issue, especially when it comes to recreational use —  Christian Barnes, founder of Expedition Outside, hopes to change this and improve access for all outdoor enthusiasts.

An online marketplace providing recreational access to private lands without the hassle of government regulations, Expedition Outside offers private property access, lodging options and experienced guides tailored specifically to your adventure type. Currently focusing on Southwestern Colorado, Expedition Outside now makes it possible for you to explore what was once unavailable.

Merging private land owners with people who want access to water front properties, Barnes is able to provide a one of a kind service to all levels of fishermen.

Expedition Outside experts and staff tour each location, speak directly with property owners about their resources and expectations, then price the area accordingly. If you are an avid fisherman in Southwest Colorado, but your usual spots have become too crowded, and the idea of a trespassing fee is a deterrent, for a reasonable rate, you can explore new fishing locations throughout La Plata, Archuleta, and Montezuma counties.

As a SCAPE student, Barnes was excited to sit down with professionals to learn more about creating a thriving business in the Four Corners Region. “SCAPE is an incredible mentorship opportunity” says Barnes. “I’m looking forward to speaking with people who have tactical and strategic business knowledge and who can point me in the right direction. I’m grateful to Jasper Welch at Durango Space for introducing me to the SCAPE team.”

Looking towards the future, Barnes hopes to expand beyond just fishing. Everything from hunting to mountain biking to hiking and even dog walking. Access for all outdoor enthusiasts is the overarching goal.

First Southwest Bank is dedicated to encouraging up and coming entrepreneurs who will continue to progress our community. We are excited to follow Barnes on his journey and look forward to seeing Expedition Outside thrive.
