Helping La Plata County Renters with Upfront Housing Costs

$33,460 Still Available to Support Local Renters
La Plata County's high cost of living makes securing rental housing a challenge, with average two-bedroom rents around $1,716 according to HUD’s 2024 Fair Market Value data. For many renters, covering upfront expenses like first and last month’s rent and security deposits can be a major barrier to moving into a home or apartment. That’s where the Rental Assistance Micro-Loan Program comes in.

Launched in 2022 as a collaboration between First Southwest Bank, the La Plata Economic Development Alliance, and La Plata County, the program provides micro-loans to ease these initial financial hurdles. To date, $71,588 has been loaned out to support renters, with $33,460 still available to help additional applicants.

What the Program Offers

The micro-loan program offers loans up to $5,000 at a low 4% interest rate, repayable over three years with no prepayment penalties or collateral required. Qualified applicants earning 80% or less of La Plata County’s Area Median Income (about $88,400 for a household of four*) and holding a minimum credit score of 660 can apply.

According to Sarah Tober, Executive Director of the La Plata Economic Development Alliance, the program's goal is straightforward: “Our mission to foster a strong local economy includes providing pathways for community members to live where they work. This micro-loan program provides a viable solution for many in our community seeking housing and continues to be a success thanks to the collaboration between public and private partners.”

How We’re Supporting Renters

So far, 18 micro-loans have been granted, helping individuals and families find stable housing despite a competitive rental market. The program is specifically designed to support financial stability while remaining accessible and easy to apply for, an essential combination for renters facing financial strain.

Kent Curtis, CEO & President of First Southwest Bank, highlights the program's community impact: “As a CDFI bank, we are focused on investing in community needs, including affordable rental housing. We are proud to support our community through this innovative program, especially during a time of rising rents and widespread housing insecurity. After two successful years, additional funds are still available and we want to spread the word so more people can benefit from this resource.”
